What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a professional hair removal treatment that uses a very fine sterile probe to deliver energy directly into the hair follicle. This energy destroys the follicle’s ability to produce hair, meaning the hair will not grow back. Unlike laser, which targets pigment (colour), electrolysis targets the follicle itself, which is why it works on every hair type.
Why Choose Electrolysis Over Laser?
Laser hair removal is amazing for reducing dark hair growth, but it doesn’t suit everyone. Electrolysis is often the best option if you:
Have blonde, red, grey or white hair
Want a truly permanent solution
Have hormonal hair growth (chin/jawline)
Have stubborn hairs that laser hasn’t removed
Electrolysis is also perfect for smaller, detailed areas.
Does Electrolysis Hurt?
This is one of the most common questions—and the honest answer is: it depends.
Most clients describe it as a quick sting, heat, or prick feeling. Some areas are more sensitive than others (upper lip and chin are usually the spiciest), but treatments are very manageable and get easier over time as hair becomes finer and less dense.
How Does Electrolysis Work?
Each hair follicle is treated individually. A trained therapist inserts a tiny needle into the follicle (this is not a needle injection—there is no piercing of the skin), and a small electrical current is delivered to disable the root.
Once the follicle is treated, the hair is gently removed using tweezers—there should be no pulling or tugging when the follicle has been treated correctly.
Electrolysis can be used on almost any area of the body, the most common areas we treat are the chin, neck and lip area.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Electrolysis is permanent, but it’s not instant. Hair grows in cycles, and electrolysis can only treat hairs that are currently in the active growth stage. That’s why multiple sessions are needed.
Your total number of appointments depends on:
The area being treated
How much hair is present
Hair thickness and growth speed
Hormonal factors (PCOS, pregnancy, menopause etc.)
Previous waxing/plucking history
Aftercare: What to Expect After Electrolysis
After treatment, it’s normal to have slight redness, swelling or warmth—especially on the face. This usually settles within a few hours. Our recommendations post treatment are –
Avoid makeup for 24 hours (if possible)
Keep the area clean and hands off
Avoid heat from saunas, hot showers and don’t plan to go to the public pools for a good day or so.
Your therapist will apply calming balm post treatment.
Following aftercare properly helps prevent irritation and supports smooth, clear healing.
Is Electrolysis Safe?
Yes—when performed by a trained professional using correct settings and sterile technique, electrolysis is very safe and has been used worldwide for decades.
It’s suitable for most clients, including those who can’t have laser due to:
Certain medications
Pigmentation concerns
Very light hair
So, if you’re unsure whether electrolysis is right for you, a consultation is always the best place to start, then your therapist can discuss the treatment further and make sure electrolysis is the right treatment for you.
